Outreach

Iā€™m passionate about communicating my research and geology in general to the public, and especially to K-12 students. My efforts have included demonstrations, field trips, career fairs, and lab visits. I have also been working with teachers to incorporate geology into math, physics, and chemistry curricula and I have participated as a judge in many science fairs on the local, regional, state, and international level.

I have worked with K-12 teachers in LA and Kern County to bring geology into the classroom, with interactive presentations on what geologists do, how rocks form, how mountain ranges are built, how we measure time in geology, why there are earthquakes, and many other topics.

I have materials I can bring to class, such as a rock collection and activities for illustrating earthquakes, radioactive decay, and the formation of mountain ranges.

If you are interested in working with me to bring geology into your classroom (in-person in the Fairbanks area or anywhere via Zoom), please contact me at fhofmann (at) alaska.edu.
